Alfred Ost tekent Mechelen in frisse kleuren
Historicus, stadsgids en vooral een goed verteller, Marcel Kocken (83) bracht 125 prentkaarten samen in een prachtig met harde kaft geïllustreerd boek Mechelen in Prentkaarten. Het boek beschrijft de door Mechelen gecharmeerde Ost, en niet zozeer over de kunstenaar zelf.
“Ost is voor mij meer een impressionist” zegt Kocken. “Hij komt met frisse en felle kleuren waardoor hij afbreuk doet aan de bruin-gele tinten. wat maakt dat Ost een handige tekenaar is. Met bijna één pennentrek tekende hij een silhouet. Hij tekende veel kinderen die speelden, of ergens tegen een muurtje stonden te pissen, …”.Om dit heuglijk moment niet zomaar te laten voorbijgaan, werd een boekvoorstelling op touw gezet in de Kolommenzaal van het Mechels stadhuis. Ondanks zijn hoge leeftijd is Marcel nog steeds een bezige bij, ik moest dan ook snel zijn om her en der verhalen mee te pikken. Zo snel als hij was gekomen, zo snel was hij, na een korte toespraak alweer met de noorderzon verdwenen.

In 1902 kwam de familie van Alfred Ost in Mechelen terecht, waar hij tot 1914 woonde. Als kunstenaar creëerde hij aquarellen en postkaarten. Luc Van Hoeylandt (Uitgeverij ElenA) en Marcel Kocken hebben nauw samengewerkt waardoor Mechelen in Prentkaarten dan ook zeer snel klaar was voor productie, en vanaf heden in de boekhandels te vinden is. Er moest na een uitgave vijfendertig jaar geleden, een beter versie van deze prentkaarten verschijnen, en dat is met deze een feit.
Wie Marcel Kocken kent weet dat hij uren na elkaar kan vertellen over zijn en onze stad Mechelen. Als we weten dat zijn ouders, en dan vooral zijn vader de fortjes aan de Dijlekant bewoonden, en zijn moeder uit het Begijnhof komt, dan is het bijna vanzelfsprekend dat hij een groot hart heeft voor de stad Mechelen. Wie het boek met de rode kaft openslaat krijgt als inleiding een beknopte biografie van Alfred Ost te lezen. Het verhaal van Ost in Mechelen, toen nog een koude grijze stad, beschrijft Kocken op zijn gekende wijze, en beeindigt deze uitgebreide tekst met “Dank U, meester Ost”
“Alfred Ost was een heel belangrijk kunstenaar voor Mechelen.” zegt Björn Siffer als Schepen van Cultuur. “Hij heeft de geschiedenis van Mechelen in zijn prentkaarten aan de wereld getoond. Het Mechelen van weleer in prentkaart
De verzameling prentkaarten in het 168 blz tellende boek zijn uniek te noemen. Echtgenote Marlies Fischer heeft door de jaren heen deze verzameling bij elkaar gesprokkeld. Het moet een heel speurwerk geweest zijn om deze exemplaren, daterend van begin ste eeuw, bij elkaar te zoeken
De O-L-V-over de Dijlekerk en de Sint-Romboutskathedraal zijn de eerste kunstwerken die we te zien krijgen. De afbeeldingen staan niet chronologisch gerangschikt, en brengen ons naar vervlogen tijden, waar ik en vele andere Mechelaars, helemaal geen weet van hebben. En juist daarom is Mechelen in Prentkaarten zo interessant. Veel van de historische gebouwen staan er vandaag nog, maar het zingen en dansen in de straten, als de liedjeszangers aan het Schepenhuis of de Sinte-Mette zangers aan de Dijle, doen me dagdromen. Was het Mechelen van weleer borrelend en bruisender dan vandaag ?
Ost neemt ons mee naar alles wat leefde rond de Dijle en de Vlietjes waar destijds heel wat bedrijvigheid heerste. Vandaag komen vlietjes terug piepen, weliswaar niet in de gesteldheid van toen. Waarom hebben deze waterlopen het onderspit moeten delven ? En dan zijn er nog de Jubelfeesten van Hanswijk, de Reuzen, het Viergebroederspaard, de Belfortstrijd, … allemaal mooie reeksen, en toch omvatten de afbeeldingen slechts enkele lijnen verklarende tekst.

“Tekst is heel beperkt gebleven, omdat we de kaarten willen laten spreken” vertelt Marcel Kocken “Ost had oog voor detail, tekst is niet nodig, je moet de kaarten lezen”.
