In 2016, the authoritative business magazine Financial Times promoted Mechelen as one of the European Cities of the Future. As the only Flemish central city, Mechelen featured three times in the list of European Cities of the Future. Among the 55 smaller European cities selected, Mechelen was in the top ten no less than three times.
